Tensions Rise as NPP Bigwigs Gather to Back Abronye's Legal Fight

On September 12, 2025, the Accra Circuit Court became a focal point for supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as key party members gathered to show solidarity for Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, the NPP's Bono Region Chair. This gathering underscored the significance of party unity during challenging times, as notable figures, including former National Chairman Freddie Blay, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin, and National Youth Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, attended the proceedings.

Abronye's troubles began when he was taken into custody by the Ghana Police Service on September 9, 2025. He was accused of engaging in behavior deemed to "breach the peace," leading to his remand and subsequent court appearance. According to the police statement released on September 8, the charges against him involved “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace,” a serious allegation that has drawn public scrutiny and debate.

The arrest of Abronye has attracted a wave of reactions from both political allies and opponents. Social media platforms have been ablaze with opinions, particularly from members within the NPP. Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, former CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme, expressed his concerns on Facebook. He criticized the current leadership of the Ghana Police Service under IGP Dampare, comparing it unfavorably to the previous administration. He lamented that while both political parties face scrutiny, it appears only NPP members are prominently featured in police communications, highlighting a perceived imbalance in treatment between the two major political parties.

Similarly, Awal Mohammed, a former PRO of the National Youth Employment Agency, voiced his thoughts on social media regarding the arrest. He suggested that the publicity surrounding Abronye’s case sets a concerning precedent for how the police handle political figures, echoing sentiments that the representation of suspects by the police could be skewed along political lines.

Abronye's case is not just an isolated incident; it reflects the broader political tension in Ghana. The division of opinion across party lines illustrates growing concerns about fairness and transparency in the enforcement of the law. As NPP members rally behind Abronye, the implications of his arrest resonate far beyond the courtroom. The reactions from political leaders and their supporters are a testament to the charged atmosphere within Ghanaian politics, where allegations of bias can undermine public trust in law enforcement.
