Wontumi Withdraws Motion to Change Bail Terms in High Court

In a recent development, Bernard Antwi Boasiko, the Chairman of the Ashanti Region branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has opted to withdraw his motion for a review of his bail conditions. The motion was initially filed at the High Court in Accra on May 30, 2025, and was set to be heard on June 3. However, just a day before the scheduled hearing, the legal team informed the court of their decision to withdraw the application.

Chairman Wontumi had previously contested the GH¢50 million bail amount mandated by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), arguing through his legal representatives that the figure was exorbitant and appeared intended to obstruct his release. The motion to review the bail terms included detailed justifications outlined in an accompanying affidavit.

The official withdrawal of the application was submitted by Gary Nimako, a private legal practitioner representing the beleaguered NPP chairman. It was noted that the lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed the completion of all necessary documentation pertaining to the two sureties required for the bail. This documentation progress effectively rendered the court application redundant. Appiah-Kubi acknowledged the significant assistance provided by Bryan Acheampong, the former Minister for Food and Agriculture, in facilitating this turnaround.
