In a recent interview with TNT Sports, former Nigeria captain John Mikel Obi expressed his admiration for Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien, emphasizing that he was often “underrated” during his tenure in the English Premier League. Essien, who made headlines when he signed for Chelsea in 2005, did so with a then-club record transfer fee of £24.4 million from Lyon. His arrival marked a significant moment in Chelsea's history, adding depth and skill to their midfield.

Throughout his time at Chelsea, Essien was known for his vital contributions on the pitch, most notably his stunning goal against Barcelona in the 2009 Champions League semi-finals. However, his career was frequently hampered by injuries that limited his playing opportunities, preventing him from receiving the full acclaim that his talent warranted.

Reflecting on their shared experiences at Chelsea, Mikel Obi praised Essien’s remarkable attributes, stating, “Michael Essien didn’t get the recognition he deserved. We called him the train. When he goes, it is difficult to stop; power, speed, technique. Everything he had.” This description underscores Essien's unique combination of physicality and finesse that made him a critical asset to the team.
