The heavy rainstorm that swept through the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, May 18, 2025, unleashed devastating flooding, leaving numerous communities grappling with power outages. In the aftermath of this natural disaster, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) announced their collaborative efforts with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to expedite the restoration of electricity in the affected regions.
The storm, which surprised residents with its intensity, caused significant flooding in various areas. As a result, NADMO took prompt action, advising ECG to temporarily disconnect power in specific locations to prioritize safety as floodwaters remained dangerously high.
In a public statement, the ECG detailed the specific neighborhoods currently under a precautionary power isolation directive from NADMO. The list included several notable locations: Borteyman Stadium, Affordable Housing, Borteyman Township, Little Roses, Lakeside, Nanakrom, Kissieman, Dome Pillar 2, and Christian Village, among others. These areas faced immediate risk due to water levels and debris that posed threats to infrastructure and public safety.
“Restoring power to these communities is of the utmost importance to us,” stated an ECG representative. “However, our primary focus right now must be on safety. We are in constant communication with NADMO to ensure that we act responsibly as conditions change.”
Residents expressed their frustrations as they navigated the aftermath of the storm. “It’s challenging,” said a local shop owner in Adenta. “We rely on electricity for our businesses and daily life, but safety comes first. We just want to know when we might get power back.”
ECG reassured its customers that restoration efforts were underway. “While restoring electricity remains a priority, we won’t compromise safety regulations,” the statement continued. “We ask our customers to remain vigilant and report any localized outages, as well as issues like fallen utility poles or sagging lines. Swift intervention can be initiated if we receive timely information.”
Customers were encouraged to reach out through various channels: by calling the ECG Call Centre, visiting local offices, or contacting the company via social media platforms.
