Kumasi Armed Robber Sentenced to 120 Years for String of Violent Crimes

In a landmark ruling today, the Kumasi High Court delivered a stern message against violent crime, convicting and sentencing 36-year-old Dominic Afriyie, known to many as GH, to a staggering 120 years in prison with hard labor for two counts of robbery and life imprisonment for the tragic murder of a respected local businessman.

The presiding judge, His Honour Mr. Abdul Razak, presided over a case that has gripped the Kumasi community since the harrowing events of November 20, 2021. On that fateful night, Afriyie and an accomplice launched a violent attack on the home of Michael Dela Agbo Klu, a 43-year-old pharmacist and building contractor, leaving a family shattered and a community reeling from the brutality of the crime.

The assault unfolded in the quiet neighborhood of Atasemanso. Reports indicate that Afriyie and his accomplices entered the Klu residence armed, threatening the family at gunpoint. In the course of the robbery, they seized valuable possessions, including two mobile phones, an ASUS Zenbook laptop, and a cash sum of GH¢1,500. Tragically, the confrontation escalated to murder when Afriyie shot and killed Mr. Klu, who was caught in the crossfire of this senseless act of violence.

The wake of this crime sent shockwaves through the local community. Friends, family, and colleagues remembered Mr. Klu as not just a dedicated pharmacist but a pillar in the building and construction sector. His death marked a profound loss, mourned deeply by those who knew him and the vibrant life he led.

Law enforcement swiftly moved to prevent further crimes after receiving intelligence about another planned robbery in the same area on December 30, 2021. The authorities acted promptly, ontrolling a surveillance operation that indicated Afriyie's potential involvement in further criminal activities. This proactive approach aimed to protect the Atasemanso neighborhood from additional violence.

In the early hours of December 31, 2021, at precisely 2:20 a.m., a police team successfully apprehended Afriyie, along with three accomplices, during a high-stakes operation. They were traveling in a Toyota Corolla with the registration number AS 5970-20. A search of the vehicle yielded two pistols and two single-barreled shotguns, raising alarms about the criminal activities that may have ensued had these weapons not been seized.

Following the arrest, an in-depth investigation was launched. Despite the initial insistence of his innocence, evidence began to mount against Afriyie. Authorities confirmed that Afriyie had acted alone in the robbery and murder of Mr. Klu, providing crucial details that underscored the cold nature of his actions.

As the case proceeded to trial, the courtroom filled with those eager for justice. Despite pleading not guilty to the charges brought against him, the evidence presented by the prosecution showcased a compelling narrative of greed and brutality. The jury, comprising seven members, scrutinized the details, ultimately reaching a consensus that reflected the overwhelming evidence.

The trial concluded with a pivotal verdict that resonated throughout the courtroom. His Honour Mr. Abdul Razak announced the sentence, emphasizing the gravity of Afriyie's actions and their impact on the victim's family and the community. The 120-year prison term for robbery and the life sentence for murder illustrate the court's commitment to addressing violent crime with the seriousness it demands.

In his closing remarks, Judge Razak reminded those present of the values of safety and security that every community deserves and the vital role that justice plays in restoring faith in the legal system. "Violence will not be tolerated in our society," he stated firmly, reinforcing the message that the law would hold offenders accountable for their actions.

The sentencing has elicited mixed reactions from the public. Many residents expressed relief, believing that this decision would serve as a deterrent to others contemplating similar criminal paths. “This sends a strong signal to those who think they can commit violent crimes with impunity,” said a local community leader.

Meanwhile, the family of Mr. Klu expressed profound relief and gratitude for the judicial process. It was a moment of bittersweet justice for them, as they hoped that this ruling could bring some measure of closure to the trauma they have endured since losing their loved one. "No sentence will bring him back, but knowing that justice has been served helps us breathe a little easier," one family member shared during an emotional gathering after the verdict.
