The Communications Ministry urges the public to stay calm as efforts are made to address the MTN data breach.

The Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations has advised all MTN customers to remain calm following a cyber breach that has affected approximately 5,700 of them. The Ministry is investigating whether there were any security breaches on the part of the Mobile Network Operator. In a press release issued in Accra on Tuesday, the Ministry stated, “We urge all customers to stay calm as we work together to resolve this issue and keep the public updated.”

The Ministry is collaborating closely with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), the National Communications Authority (NCA), and the Data Protection Commission (DPC) to investigate a potential data breach. They stated, “This collaboration aims to determine the extent of the breach and to ensure that necessary measures are taken to protect customer data. The Ministry will ensure that affected customers are contacted in accordance with Data Protection Laws.”

Earlier, MTN Ghana announced that a recent cybersecurity incident has impacted the data of approximately 5,700 customers. In a press release issued on April 28, 2025, MTN Group noted that while their platforms remain fully operational, they are taking this matter seriously and are closely monitoring the situation.

According to the release, MTN is currently working with cybersecurity experts to conduct a thorough forensic investigation to assess the full impact of the incident. The company emphasized that the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of its systems are crucial to its operations and customer service.
