CenPOA Highlights Major Challenges in Education: Schools Under Trees and Infrastructure Deficits

In response to a recent proposal by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, the Centre for Public Opinion and Awareness (CenPOA) has raised concerns regarding the allocation of Ghana's oil revenue to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) “No Fees Stress” initiative for tertiary education. The Education Minister suggested earmarking 2.5% of the country's oil income to support this policy during a stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Students Loan Trust Fund on September 5. He emphasized that reliance on the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) alone would not be sufficient to meet the funding needs of the initiative.

CenPOA contends that, while the effort to alleviate the financial burdens associated with tertiary education is commendable, diverting vital oil revenues to this purpose could exacerbate existing educational challenges within the country. The organization pointed out that Ghana is currently grappling with significant issues, including the prevalence of schools functioning under trees, a stark infrastructural deficit at the basic education level, and questions surrounding the sustainability of the Free Senior High School (SHS) program.

By prioritizing the "No Fees Stress" policy, CenPOA suggests that the government may overlook pressing educational needs that require immediate attention and investment. They argue that the proposal appears more as a populist strategy aimed at garnering electoral support rather than a sound, long-term policy for national development. The organization emphasizes the importance of investing oil revenues in foundational sectors that will generate sustainable economic growth and job creation, which, in turn, would bolster the demand for higher education.

The pressing issue of unemployment among graduates is another point of contention for CenPOA. With many individuals holding degrees struggling to find suitable employment, expanding productive sectors within the economy is crucial. This approach would not only provide job opportunities but also encourage a practical demand for higher education that aligns with the needs of the labor market.

CenPOA calls upon policymakers, stakeholders, and the general public to critically evaluate such proposals, stressing the necessity of focusing on strengthening foundational education systems. By creating an environment conducive to economic growth and prioritizing investments in basic educational infrastructure, the government can better address the immediate needs of the country while setting the stage for sustainable development in the future.
