National Theatre Partners with Image Bureau to Launch Innovative Play This August

The National Theatre of Ghana has officially announced a significant collaboration with Image Bureau and April Communications for an upcoming production of Wole Soyinka's acclaimed play, “Death and the King’s Horseman.” The partnership was formalized with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at a ceremony held at the National Theatre on June 23, marking a prominent step in the promotion of the performing arts in Ghana.

Set to captivate audiences, the play is scheduled to run for two consecutive days on August 23 and 24, with additional encore performances on August 30 and 31, 2025. This production promises to showcase the theatrical talent and rich culture of Ghana, consistent with the National Theatre’s long-standing mission to advocate for the performing arts.

During the signing ceremony, Herbert Malm, the Acting Executive Director of the National Theatre, underscored the importance of this partnership. He articulated that the collaboration aligns seamlessly with the institution's core purpose of fostering and elevating the arts landscape in the country. "This is a momentous occasion to initiate publicity for the shows, reinforcing our commitment to support the creative industry in Ghana," Malm stated.

He further emphasized the National Theatre's enduring pledge to nurture the arts since its establishment in 1992. "Today’s event reaffirms our dedication to providing crucial support to our partners, especially as our resident groups come together to ensure the success of this project," he added, encouraging theatre enthusiasts and the broader public to join in what promises to be a thrilling experience.

George Quaye, the CEO of Image Bureau, also shared his enthusiasm for the production. He acknowledged the complexities involved in staging such a profound play, expressing confidence in the National Theatre's capability to deliver a high-caliber performance. “Our collaborative journey began with the previous administration, and we are excited to embark on this new chapter. We are confident that this partnership will yield rewarding outcomes and elevate the arts in Ghana,” Quaye remarked.

He did not shy away from recognizing the challenges posed by "Death and the King’s Horseman," highlighting that it is a demanding work requiring considerable execution skill. "Many directors might shy away from this production due to its depth and difficulty. However, we have received extraordinary support from the leadership at the National Theatre," he stated. Quaye expressed optimism that with the dedicated efforts of the theatre’s team, this production could become one of the most outstanding theatrical displays in Ghana.
