In a proactive response to growing tensions in the Middle East, the government of Ghana has successfully completed the first phase of its emergency evacuation plan, moving a group of its citizens from Iran to Turkey. Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced this significant development on June 20, revealing that efforts are underway to facilitate the evacuation of Ghanaians residing in Israel.
The announcement followed a crucial meeting held earlier that week with the ambassadors of both Israel and Iran. This meeting focused on ensuring the safety and swift relocation of Ghanaian nationals from these regions experiencing conflict. According to Minister Ablakwa, these diplomatic talks were essential for the evacuation strategy as they enabled the Ghanaian government to secure the necessary approvals for border access, crucial for the safe transit of its citizens.
"The first batch of Ghanaians in Iran has been successfully evacuated to Turkey," Minister Ablakwa confirmed in a social media update. He reassured families and friends that efforts to evacuate their fellow nationals in Israel would commence shortly.
The engagement with Israeli Ambassador Roey Gilad and Iranian Ambassador Ali Ghomshi allowed Ghana an opportunity to express its position on several international matters. During these discussions, Minister Ablakwa openly addressed concerns raised by the Israeli Ambassador regarding Ghana’s voting record in international organizations. He emphasized the importance of respecting Ghana’s sovereign right to make independent decisions, rooted in the country's well-established foreign policy principles.
Minister Ablakwa reiterated Ghana's commitment to non-alignment and adherence to international law during this critical period, especially as the country currently holds a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council and chairs the governing board of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
