-Ghanaian Students in Hungary-
Ghanaian students studying in Hungary under government scholarships are experiencing a worsening financial crisis due to 11 months of unpaid stipends and two years of overdue book allowances.
Affected students report that these prolonged delays jeopardize their education, well-being, and future prospects. Despite multiple attempts to engage with government officials, their appeals have gone unanswered. Consequently, many are now facing severe financial hardship, academic disruptions, psychological stress, and declining health.
“Many students are currently facing significant hardships, including severe financial stress, academic difficulties, psychological strain, and adverse effects on their health and well-being,” a joint statement from students noted.
The students explained that the absence of stipends has made it almost impossible for them to cover basic living expenses like rent and utilities. As a result, some are experiencing unstable housing conditions and are at risk of eviction.
In an urgent appeal, the students are urging the Government of Ghana to take immediate action to address this situation.
“We urge the government to prioritize the release of the 11 months' outstanding stipend and the two years' book allowance payments to ensure that students can meet their basic needs and continue their education without further interruptions,” the statement read.
The students are also advocating for:
- - A clear and reliable payment schedule
- - Additional financial support structures
- - Open and regular dialogue between student representatives and government officials
“Regular communication between government representatives and student organizations is crucial to ensure that students’ concerns are voiced, understood, and addressed promptly,” they emphasized.
The students stress that this crisis is not just about immediate survival but also about protecting Ghana’s long-term investment in its future leaders. “We sincerely hope that the government and other stakeholders will heed this urgent call to action and come to our aid before further disaster strikes,” they added.
