Ghanaian musician Moliy recently shared insights into her journey as an independent artist, highlighting her deliberate decision to remain unattached to a record label. In a candid interview with Revolt TV on July 7, 2025, the talented singer-songwriter, known for hits like “Shake It to the Max,” reflected on her steadfast philosophy regarding artistic freedom and integrity.
From the very outset of her career, Moliy expressed reservations about signing with a record label. Through her experiences and the stories she encountered about artists’ struggles within label structures, she developed a strong preference for nurturing authentic and trustworthy relationships with the individuals she collaborates with. For Moliy, music is an intimate form of expression, and she believes that maintaining control over her artistic direction is paramount.
“I’ve always been somewhat hesitant about becoming a label artist,” Moliy revealed during the interview. “I’ve heard so many stories about the challenges artists face under labels, and I want the people I work with to be trustworthy. It’s important for me to feel that the relationship is organic. I don’t want to just be a name on a list; my music is deeply personal to me.”
One of the primary advantages that Moliy finds in her independence is the complete autonomy she has over her creative process. Unlike many artists who may find themselves constrained by the demands or expectations of a label, Moliy relishes the freedom to explore her creativity without external pressures. “The most liberating part of being independent is having the freedom to create what I want, without anyone telling me what to do. I don’t like being dictated to,” she stated emphatically. “If you’re not pushing yourself forward, then no one will do it for you, and that’s something I truly appreciate about this journey.”
However, the road to independence is not without its challenges. Moliy candidly recounted a particularly difficult period when she faced hurdles in song distribution due to her independent status. Despite her musical capabilities, she found herself unable to release new material for an entire year in 2024 due to the complications surrounding distribution deals, which are typically facilitated by record labels.
“I reached a point where I was actively seeking distribution options. I hadn’t put out any music for a whole year, and my manager and I were engaging in conversations about securing a distribution deal to allow me to share new work. While the discussions seemed promising, nothing materialized,” she explained. At one juncture of frustration, she mentioned to herself, “I don’t want to be stagnant; I still want to move.”
Responding to this dilemma, her manager encouraged her to tease new music as a way to maintain engagement with her audience. “You should tease music, at least let people know that you’re still working. Perhaps they will hear something and be curious,” her manager suggested. This advice marked the beginning of a renewed wave of creativity for Moliy, as she began to share snippets of her upcoming projects, reconnecting with her fanbase and generating excitement.
Moliy’s ability to navigate the complexities of the music industry on her own terms speaks to her resilience and determination. As she continues to build her brand independently and cultivate her artistry, it’s clear that her commitment to authenticity and creative freedom remains at the heart of her endeavors.

As she looks to the future, Moliy exemplifies a new wave of artists who reject traditional pathways in favor of authenticity and self-determination. Her story serves as an inspiration to many aspiring musicians who may be contemplating the balance between creative freedom and commercial success, reaffirming the notion that the journey of artistry is as much about personal expression as it is about the music itself. In exploring her independent path, Moliy not only celebrates her individuality but also encourages others to carve their own routes in an ever-evolving industry.
