The Ghana Education Service (GES) has taken a firm stance against examination malpractice as the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) approaches. At a press conference held on June 9, 2025, the Director-General of GES, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, underscored the importance of integrity in the examination process and called on students to commit to honest efforts in their preparation.

Prof. Davis voiced serious concerns regarding the prevalent practice of relying on leaked examination answers, commonly referred to as ‘apor.’ He encouraged students to concentrate on their studies instead of seeking shortcuts that ultimately undermine their learning and success. “Focus on your preparation and give your best effort to excel,” he stated. “Do not be misled by the false promise of leaked answers or external assistance. It is unreliable and will not serve you well in the long run.”
In addition to advising students, Prof. Davis highlighted the responsibilities of invigilators and supervisors during the examination period. He warned that any educator found colluding in malpractice would face stringent disciplinary measures, including the potential loss of their job. “We need to foster a culture of integrity in our educational system. The consequences for invigilators who engage in or facilitate cheating will be severe,” he stressed, reinforcing the necessity for role models within the educational framework.

This year, a total of 603,328 candidates are set to participate in the BECE. This figure is comprised of 297,250 male candidates and 306,078 female candidates, representing both school and private entries. With strict measures in place against malpractice and a clear commitment to upholding academic integrity, the GES aims to ensure that the upcoming examinations exemplify fairness and educational integrity for all participants.
